Showing 1-7 of 7 questions in Rolling Shutters

  • What are rolling shutters used for?

Rolling shutters secure shops, warehouses, garages, windows and villas. They guard against theft and weather, and can be operated by hand, chain or motor.

The curtain coils into a box above the opening, so it takes no floor space. Shops use them for shopfront security, industrial units for wide loading openings, and homes for windows and terraces. Explore automatic rolling shutters for commercial use or residential rolling shutters for villas.

  • Are perforated or see-through shutters available?

Yes, perforated slats, grille designs and polycarbonate options are available. They let people see displays and allow airflow while the shutter is closed.

These are common in malls and retail units, where regulations or landlords often require visibility into closed shops, and where ventilation helps. They give less protection than solid slats, so choose according to your risk. Talk to us about automatic rolling shutters for shopfronts.

  • Can rolling shutters be operated during a power outage?

Yes, motorised rolling shutters include a manual override, such as a hand crank or emergency chain, so they can be opened or closed without power.

For critical sites such as shops with valuable stock or premises that need fast access, battery backup can be added so the motor keeps running. The manual override should be checked during routine maintenance so it works when needed. Ask about backup for your automatic rolling shutter.

  • What fire-rated shutter options exist?

Fire-rated steel shutters with certified ratings are available. They can close automatically on a fire alarm and help compartmentalise a building so flames and smoke spread more slowly.

The rating, mounting and release method must follow civil defence requirements for your project, so specify them with your consultant. Ordinary rolling shutters are not fire rated. Contact us with your building type and we will advise on suitable rolling shutters and the approvals to expect.

  • Should I choose aluminium or steel for a shopfront shutter?

Choose aluminium for lighter weight and corrosion resistance, and steel for higher strength and security. Aluminium slats are easier on the motor and suit most retail frontages, particularly in humid areas. Galvanised or heavier steel slats resist forced entry better and suit warehouses and high-risk premises.

Perforated or see-through slats can keep the display visible after hours. Compare options on our automatic rolling shutters page.

  • Can a rolling shutter be added to an existing shop opening?

In most cases yes, provided there is room for the guide rails at the sides and a shutter box above the opening. If the ceiling or fascia is too tight, a compact box, an external mount or a different door type may be needed. Measurements of width, height and available headroom decide the approach.

We survey the opening, then recommend a suitable rolling shutter and motor arrangement.

  • How do I release a motorised rolling shutter by hand?

Use the manual override provided with the motor, typically an emergency crank, chain or release cord. Operating it depends on the model, so keep the handover instructions close. Disconnect or isolate the power before using a crank, and never force a shutter that is jammed.

If you cannot release it, call a technician rather than pulling on the curtain. We can show you the override when we install automatic rolling shutters.
