Mechanical wear shows up first on heavy gates: rollers, rails, rack and pinion. Electronically, faults are most often an encoder or cable problem, supply trouble or a board damaged by heat, moisture or a surge. Brushless drives do not have brushes to wear, so the motor itself is less often the issue.
We separate mechanical from electrical causes by moving the gate by hand and then testing the supply, board and encoder in turn.
