A weak battery is the first thing to check, since a tired battery reduces range long before the remote stops completely. Next is the receiver antenna: a damaged or disconnected lead cuts range sharply. New metal cladding, a new neighbouring radio device or a gate control box moved inside a metal enclosure can also reduce it.

We replace the battery, test the receiver and antenna, and if necessary relocate the antenna for a clear signal.

Reversal on closing is a safety response. The usual causes are a photocell beam that is blocked or misaligned, a force or limit setting that needs adjusting, or a door that has become heavier or stiffer than before, for example because of a worn spring or dry rollers.

Do not adjust the force high to hide the problem. We check the door balance first, then the sensors and settings, so the opener is not working against a mechanical fault.

Batteries wear with age and with heat, so a unit that worked years ago may no longer hold a charge.

Say whether it is a swing gate, a sliding gate or a garage door, and describe the fault: does it move at all, and where does it stop? Mention how many remotes you use and whether anything changed recently, such as a power cut or repainting.

A boom barrier arm that has been hit by a vehicle is usually bent rather than fully broken, and a mild bend in an aluminium or fibreglass arm can sometimes be straightened. A sharp bend, a crack, or damage near the mounting bracket is a safety risk and the arm should be replaced rather than repaired.

We also check the barrier's mechanism and counterweight spring after any impact, since a bent arm can throw off the balance even if the arm itself still looks usable.
