Start with the basics: is there mains supply at the socket or isolator, and has a breaker tripped? Then check the fuse on the control unit if you can reach it safely. A power surge or water in the control box can also cut power to the board.

Please do not open a wet control box. A technician will test the supply, fuse and transformer, and then the board, and will tell you whether the unit can be repaired or should be replaced.

If the motor runs and the door stays put, the drive is not connecting. A broken chain or belt, a stripped gear or a disengaged release are the usual causes. A door that has become out of balance, from a broken spring, may also be too heavy for the operator to lift.

Do not force a door with a broken spring. We check the spring balance and drive before the opener is tested, since the operator should not carry the full weight.

Signs are clicking or knocking as the gate moves, an uneven travel speed, visible chipped teeth, and metal or plastic dust under the rack. A pinion and rack that do not mesh correctly can also cause the gate to stop and reverse.

We check the engagement, the gap between rack and pinion, and the rack fixing. Often an adjustment or lubrication solves it. Where teeth are damaged, replacement of the pinion or rack sections is needed.

Not necessarily. The remote and receiver have to use the same radio system, and older receivers may only learn certain remote types. We do not assume compatibility between different brands, so we check the receiver in the gate first and tell you what can be stored.

If the old receiver is not suitable, a new receiver and a set of remotes can be fitted so that all users have a matching set.

The technician checks the mechanical parts: gate wheels or hinges, track, rack and pinion, fixings and the release. Then the electrics: supply, fuses, control unit, limit settings, photocells and edges. Moving parts are lubricated, sensors are cleaned, and the gate is run through several cycles, including a test of reversing on an obstruction.

At the end we list what is fine and what may need replacing later.

A boom barrier arm that has been hit by a vehicle is usually bent rather than fully broken, and a mild bend in an aluminium or fibreglass arm can sometimes be straightened. A sharp bend, a crack, or damage near the mounting bracket is a safety risk and the arm should be replaced rather than repaired.

We also check the barrier's mechanism and counterweight spring after any impact, since a bent arm can throw off the balance even if the arm itself still looks usable.
